After becoming a master in the Guild of St Luke in Antwerp, Gillis Congnet travelled in Italy between Naples, Sicily, Terni and Florence. These travels exposed him to the work of Titian. Congnet became famous for his nocturnal scenes, and, according to Karel van Mander, exerted considerable influence in Amsterdam.
